Nikita Miller, Ronsford Beaton called-up in Windies ODI squad

Barbados [West Indies], Dec 5 (ANI): Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller has been recalled in the 15-man West Indies squad after a two-year gap for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning on December 20 at the Cobham Oval in Whangarei.

The experienced left-arm spinner last played for the Windies during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. He has made 46 appearances in this format.

Reflecting on Miller's inclusion, Courtney Browne, the chairman of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel, said, "Miller has played ODI cricket previously. Along with his vast experience in our domestic competitions, we felt he was the right fit to form a part of our ODI bowling unit at this time. With the World Cup qualifiers fast approaching, we felt this was not the right time to introduce an inexperienced slow bowler."

"This series against New Zealand and our CWI Regional Super50 Cup next year are the only chances we will have for preparation prior to the World Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled to be played next March in Zimbabwe," he added.

Uncapped fast bowler Ronsford Beaton has also earned a call-up in the ODI squad comprising the likes of swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle and all-rounder Marlon Samuels, who were part of the Caribbean ODI team against England in September.

Beaton, who was also named in the West Indies A squad for a home series against Sri Lanka A, seems to have earned a call-up in the ODI squad after bagging 11 wickets from 10 games in this year's Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

For the T20I series, experienced all-rounder Rayad Emrit has been called up for the first time in this format. A medium-fast bowler and powerful lower-order batsman, he played two ODIs for Windies a decade ago in India.

Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine have also been named in the T20I squad, while Samuel Badree, who missed West Indies' previous T20 assignment in England, has also made a return.

On the selection of the T20 squad, Browne said, "The selection of Emrit is to fill one of the all-rounder roles. He has always been on the fringes of selection and now gets his opportunity. He is a whole-hearted player, and has been a consistent performer in our domestic competitions and so the opportunity has now presented itself for him to join our T20I squad."

Besides ODIs, West Indies and New Zealand are also slated to play three-match T20Is series, starting December 29 at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

West Indies ODI squad: Jason Holder (capt), Jason Mohammed, Sunil Ambris, Ronsford Beaton, Shannon Gabriel, Chris Gayle, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Nikita Miller, Ashley Nurse, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Kesrick Williams

West Indies T20I squad: Carlos Brathwaite (capt), Samuel Badree, Ronsford Beaton, Rayad Emrit, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor, Chadwick Walton, Kesrick Williams (ANI)

Guyana Diaspora Forum

We have a large database of Guyanese worldwide.  Most of our readers are in the USA, Canada, and the UK.  Our Blog and Newsletter  would not only carry  articles and videos on Guyana, but also other articles on a wide range of subjects that may be of interest to our readers in over 200 countries, many of them non-Guyanese  We hope that you like our selections.

It is estimated that over one million Guyanese, when counting their dependents, live outside of Guyana.  This exceeds the population of Guyana, which is now about 750,000.  Many left early in the 50’s and 60’s while others went with the next wave in the 70’s and 80’s.  The latest wave left over the last 20 years. This outflow of Guyanese, therefore, covers some three generations. This outflow still continues today, where over 80 % of U.G. graduates now leave after graduating.  We hope this changes, and soon.

Guyanese, like most others, try to keep their culture and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.  The problem has been that many Guyanese have not looked back, or if they did it was only fleetingly.  This means that the younger generations and those who left at an early age know very little about Guyana since many have not visited the country.  Also, if they do get information about Guyana, it is usually negative and thus the cycle of non-interest is cultivated.

This Guyana Diaspora Online Forum , along with its monthly newsletter, aims at bringing Guyanese together to support positive news, increase travel and tourism in Guyana and, in general, foster the birth of a new Guyana, which has already begun notwithstanding the negative news that grabs the headlines.  As the editor and manager of the publication, I am committed to delivering Blog entries and Newsletters that are politically balanced, and focused on the positive ideas we wish to share and foster among Guyanese.

KaydenAmir Jangoo’s unbeaten 104 and Keacy Carty’s 95 helped West Indies scale a 322-run chase against Bangladesh in St Kitts. They won the series 3-0 after Jangoo became the first West Indian in 46 years to score a century on ODI debut. He guided the side in two fast-paced partnerships. It is also the fourth time that West Indies successfully chased a 300-plus target in ODIs.(13.12.2024, 19:36)(19:36)0

SalmaBy intertwining politics with sports, the BCCI has placed international cricket in a precarious position. SalmaWest Indies won their first Test at home in two-and-a-half years when they beat Bangladesh in the first Test in Antigua by 201 runs. The visitors' chase of 334 was brought to a close at 132 for 9 on the fifth morning, just an over after Alzarri Joseph struck No. 11 Shoriful Islam on the back of his shoulder. The Bangladesh physio didn't clear Shoriful to continue his innings, thus bringing the curtains down on the game as Shoriful retired hurt.(28.11.2024, 13:35)(13:35)0
