I think it is an argument that goes nowhere.

For the very good /great batsmen it will always come down to personal preference - no statistics however crafted will prove a whole lot about any batsman and as you know folks twist and turn stats to prove what they want.

All I can say with reference to Bradman is that his overall test average is so much higher than any of his very good contemporaries that it does set him apart as someone who in his time was quite extraordinary.

Having never seen Bradman bat I cannot answer that but my guess (and it is only a guess) is that he probably was not.

But even that answer is influenced by having seen Kanhai bat!!

But the original question posed was not about dashing but greatness.

I am reluctant to give Bradman anything save title as great batsman...

Bradman played 11 test series and 52 tests all in england and Oz...14 of his 52 tests were played in england...38 in Oz..thats 72% of his tests were played at home.

at the same time Len Hutton and Wally Hammond played in south africa and in the west indies as well...

Bradman seems to have been a very lucky batsman who never have to brave forrin conditions save in england.  he face wet pitches a few times and when he did he failed.

those stats say a whole lot to me.  he never played in India and he never played in south africa..and when he got wet wickets (wickets were uncovered in those days}  he failed.  mmmmmm!

I consider Bradman a great batsman for heavy scoring and great concentration, tremendous average.  but I believe had Bradman to deal with modern conditions he would not have any kind of record to match what he left the game with.

Bradman would never have coped with Hall, Griffith, Sobers and Gibbs like he handled the english..or with the later 4 prong.  he would never have dealt so manfully with Pollock and RSA..with Akram and Younis and Imran, Hadlee..the conditions in Pakistan and in India and in the west Indies..in Sri Lanka and so on.

Bradman would no doubt still have a good record but from what I sit 99.94 was possible playing england at home and away..and once each against west indies 1931, india 1947 and RSA somewhere in-between..and all at home in Oz

when I am considering great batsmen I start with others..not Bradman.  that is what I see now :)
