Hales’ second four of the day is similar to his first, edged through the cordon. A fourth Test fifty is accrued soon after when he drives to deep point, the milestone coming from 116 balls.

The Wall – Steve Finn, not Rahul Dravid – stands tall to defend against Pradeep, before he is struck on the leg. Mild appeal and no review, even though it looked close. Hawk-Eye shows a marginal bit of leg bail would have been trimmed.

Eranga overpitches, Hales punishes him with a glorious cover drive. Eranga bowls too straight, Hales punishes him by whipping off his pads

Lakmal comes on and Cook and Hales are just content to pick up another pair of singles until Cook is tempted to go for an uppercut to the final ball but misses.

Karunaratne clips Anderson for two to deep midwicket, but then the bowler reacts with a beauty next up that incredibly the left-handed opener doesn’t manage to nick.

Sri Lanka are certainly riding their luck a little at the moment, as Karunaratne again has a little prod at one from Broad around the wicket, but not getting a touch to it.Sri Lanka are certainly riding their luck a little at the moment, as Karunaratne again has a little prod at one from Broad around the wicket, but not getting a touch to it.

Sri Lanka 45-1 (Karunaratne 27, Mendis 0)
Anderson's wicket is the last act of the over, and possibly even the Test, as the rain comes again, and it's bucketing down.
