The truth is many WI supporters want the great Brian Lara to remain the highest test scorer in WI history. It pains them to see Shiv(11,414) inch up to Lara's 11,953. And so with every ordinary performance from Shiv they will bawl and scream that Shiv should retire.
Shiv's fellow Guyanese, Clive Lloyd and Lance Gibbs played tests beyond 40----did fans shout for them to retire ?
NO!
But they want Shiv to retire because they know once he reaches 12,000 runs in tests no West Indian batsman will ever surpass that.

Haven't read all the posts on this thread ......... but I think Shiv still has a lot to offer despite his poor showing in this series ..
Shame he hasn't been allowed to show what he can do in ODI's (thanks Ottiss
)....... and before the WC and his retirement !!

CHECK THIS:
Brian Lara retired from test cricket in late 2006.
Since Jan 2007---nearly 8 years---Shiv has played in 55 tests. He has scored 4678 runs at an average of 67.79 with 15 100s and 23 50s.
So it is understandable that Shiv's 48.75 average in the recent series against New Zealand will be perceived as a failure----Shiv has set HIGH STANDARDS over the past 8 years.
HERE ARE THE TOP BATSMEN SINCE 2007---by average
67.79---Shiv
66.96---Sangakkara
57.70---deVilliers
56.07---Amla

PS. Don't forget---Shiv was injured in the Barbados test---he smashed his knee into a sprinkler in the Kensington outfield.

Shiv as 'ole man' as you say probably will soon....
Shame as I probably will be done with WI cricket when he retires ....
As they say in Guyana .......... Dis done !!!

* Lara chose to retire when the WICB took his beloved captaincy away from him.
* He could have easily played for another 2 to 3 years and score an additional 2000 runs.
* BUT HE CHOSE TO RETIRE IF HE COULD'T CAPTAIN THE TEAM.
* Lara had a STRONG EGO.
RE: SHIV
* He is a stats man---he has a target in his mind and will not retire from tests until he reaches that target.
*
Once Shiv retires the Rev will pay as much attention to WI cricket as he pays to Bangladesh or Zimbabwe---miniscule.

ALL 4 OF SHIV'S DISMISSALS WERE DUE TO MENTAL ERRORS
* First time I have ever seen Shiv make so many mental errors in a series.
* His failure in Barbados can be excused---he was injured----smashed his knee into a sprinkler on the ground.
* But that LBW in Trinidad was inexcusable---that 47 should have been a 100.
* Oh well! 4 egregious mental errors and Shiv still averaged 48.75
* If Shiv had averaged 27 like Edwards or 37 like Bravo---his HATERS would be calling for him to be lynched----they already want him dropped with a 48+ series average.
