The belmont stakes!!

And he's off. California Chrome's chance at the Triple Crown may be over, but owner Steve Coburn's tirade doesn't appear to be fizzling anytime soon. On Saturday, California Chrome lost New York's Belmont Stake, finishing fourth and ending his attempt for the historic Triple Crown. Relatively unknown Tonalist won the race, helping to prolong the 36-year Triple Crown drought. After the race, California Chrome owner Steve Coburn let his anger be known loud and clear. Of Tonalist's win he said, “This is the coward’s way out,” because the horse never competed in the Preakness Stakes or the Kentucky Derby. He added “These other horses set one out and it’s not fair for the horses who are in it from day one.”

California Chrome sustained a bloody gash to his right front foot during the Belmont Stakes, an injury that may have hurt his chances in his failed bid to sweep the Triple Crown for the first time in 36 years.

Photos taken while the horse was walking back to the barn after his loss in the third leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday show the injured hoof.

It isn't clear when the injury happened, but the colt's camp says it's not serious. Chrome finished in a dead heat for fourth with Wicked Strong.

The horse was the overwhelming favorite in the Belmont and his supporters were hoping he would become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

he is absolutely right.  the qualification process should be limited to the triple crown.  qualified horses must run in all  the races.  owners should not be able to pick and choose which of the races they enter their horses. 

that's too much of an advantage to give to horses...freshness and single focus!

i run my horse in the races i want.  winning the belmont alone is a huge payoff

It happens yet again. A horse comes out of winning the Derby and Preakness as a huge fan and betting favorite only to fall to a longshot at the Belmont. Some make a ton of money on the longshot "spoiler". We know horse racing has a shady aspect to it, and this frankly seems like a scam. The odds are against this happening year after year without a little special help.
