The problem was not Baichan. It was his style of batting. Slow. Many West Indians did not appreciate that kind of batting, as it made him the WI Colin Cowdrey.

Quote from Masterblaster
[color=rgb(26, 26, 26)]The discarding of Baichan without any major failures is debatable and a number of reasons could be advanced such as his slowness, a kind of lacklustre approach in the field, and his suspicion of the short pitch delivery that did not find favour with the selectors. There is even the argument that too many Guyanese were in the side, since nearly half of the players in the West Indies were from Guyana in the mid ’70s. However, in a consistent and successful run that lasted more than five years in the regional tournament he could be considered unlucky not to have played more Test matches.

WTF. Me come back and see dis thread like de Walking Dead!!
Facetious - absolutely not.
I suspect Baichan not getting picked after the Oz tour had more to do with the way he batted than anything else.
And as I pointed out on the tour to England in '76 WI only carried 2 openers.
I aint never really heard the story of why Richards and I think Julien opened on the Australian tour - apart from the obvious and possibly very real fear of Lille and Thompson that some others may have had.
But there was precedent - in '63 WI took McMorris and Carew to partner Hunte and Rodriguez ended up opening in the 5th test.
