Cricket South Africa to introduce racial quotas at national team level

(REUTERS)CAPE TOWN // Cricket South Africa (CSA) will formally introduce racial quotas at national team level, the board has said.

The organisation has come under fire from the South African government for a lack of transformation in its national teams, leading to a ban on bidding for international tournaments that will be reviewed next year.

President Chris Nenzani said yesterday CSA will seek to "move with the times" and set a minimum number of black players to be selected in all its national teams. He added that these "targets" would be calculated over a year and not apply on a match-by-match basis.

"In the past we had never set targets in our national teams but with changing circumstances we feel it is essential to move with the times," Nenzani said.

"The precise targets will depend on work to be undertaken by relevant committees to determine what is realistic and sustainable. This will be announced in due course."

The Proteas had already been seeking to introduce more black players into the national teams in all formats and have done so with some success.

The one-day international side that defeated Australia by 47 runs in the tri-series competition in the West Indies in June had eight players of colour for the first time.

CSA has already introduced quotas for the country’s domestic franchise competitions where teams must field at least six players of colour, including three black African players.

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula has been critical of what he says is the slow rate of transformation in the country’s major sporting codes, bar football.

The country has seen greater participation among black players across most sports at junior level despite the challenge of providing adequate school facilities in poorer districts.

But Mbalula wants to see this reflected quicker in the national teams and in April criticised the federations of rugby, cricket, netball and athletics for failing to meet what he says were agreed to targets.

He banned them from bidding for or hosting international events until they met their targets, with a review of this decision scheduled for next April.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

This is really good news. Too long other races have not been fairly given a chance or represented. Everyone should have an equal ability to join teams and show off their skills. Sometimes we find they are far better players than whites anyway! (Please note, I said sometimes ... Don't start withe me. :p)

A quota system has been in place for a long time now in addition to having a black government and CEOs at CSA.

Maybe Blacks are not interested or capable?

For me it would be more interesting to understand what is happening at Club level because, unlike football, Cricket is an expensive sport.

If there are no barriers to entry at Club level that for me is the future rather than fast tracking Blacks.

You will recall KP came to the UK purely because the imbecile was not happy about a quota system.

the article did mention some of what is going on at the club level..including quota there as well as greatly increased participation of blacks at all levels, in all sports that must be reflected  at the representative level.

and there you go with the money crap again..'cricket is expensive and may be black people do not have the money to pay for kit to play'

you always with that kind of racist nonsense that have no meaning at all.

look here Mail:  QUOTA in deh skunt!!!!!!  >:( >:( >:(

and let dem bring quota to the west indies too.  7 Indos mandatory.. and 5 nig nogs..or some such.

dat shud lock west indies cricket into permanent mediocrity and failure.

right now the whole west indies team is up for grabs to whoever can produce players of quality.

where are the white west indians now when we need them to produce world class players..the Chinese and the Indos ::confused::

its their time now...allyuh time... but allyuh nowhere to be found.

when it was our turn after pushing the whites for decades, we flooded the planet with great players...for 40 years we did that.

now allyuh supposed to be being kept back and allyuh chaffing at the bit to get allyuh place in the cricket sun.  but where are the world class players from allyuh side of the equation ::confused:: ::confused:: ::confused::

IF ALLYUH PRODUCE THEM THE GAME IN THE REGION IS ALLYUH OWN. NO QUOTA NECESSARY.  NATURAL QUOTA DAT...GREAT PLAYERS WHO MUS' BE PIK'.  ALL 11 OF DEM IF NECESSARY!

BUT ALLYUH BETTER HURRY UP BEFORE BLACK PEOPLE KETCH DEMSELVES AGAIN.  ANYTHNG IS POSSIBLE!!
::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL::
