How can an 84 NOT OUT be better than a 100 OUT ? Well, the outstanding West Indian Shiv Chanderpaul explains.
IT IS CLEAR THAT SHIV UNDERSTANDS THE MATHEMATICS OF NOT OUTS
* Here is how it works.
* Shiv has now played in 158 tests/268 innings/48 NOT OUTS and has scored 11,583 runs for an average of 52.65
* Now, let's assume that Shiv were dismissed for 85 and 84 in his last 2 innings, how would those 2 OUTS have affected Shiv's test average ?
* Simple! Instead of having 48 NOT OUTS, Shiv would have had only 46 NOT OUTS were he dismissed for 85 and 84 in his last 2 innings.
*
His TEST AVERAGE would then be 52.17 instead of 52.65
BOTTOM LINE:
* Shiv sees NOT OUTS as a TEST AVERAGE booster and since his goal is to surpass the great Lara(52.88) and the great Tendulkar(53.78) we can expect Shiv to pile on more NOT OUTS and keep raising his AVERAGE
.

TEST AVERAGE
53.78...Tendulkar
52.88...Lara
52.65...Shiv
CHECK THIS:
* If Shiv scores 53 NOT OUT in his next test innings his test average would rise from 52.65 to 52.89---he overtakes Lara(52.88)
* The JOY of NUMBERS.

And I think quite soon he will have a higher test average than both these great batsmen. It is after all not too much of a difficult task for a man who has the highest number of not out innings in history. Go Shiv!

CHECK THIS:
* Since Jan 2007 Shiv has batted in 95 innings in tests and has been NOT OUT 26 times----so Shiv has been NOT OUT in 27.3% of the innings he has played in over the past 8 years.

This thread seems to be a satire intent on proving that "not outs" do not inflate a career average.
But "not outs" do inflate a career average. Factoring out not outs (dividing runs by innings), Shiv's runs per innings average is 43. Lara's is 53 and Tendulkar's is 48. Of course other factors must always be taken into consideration.
