The video isn't available in my country, but I've read the report and it sounds like Senanayake was well within his rights to run Buttler out. Buttler had been warned, so why did he continue to take unnecessary risks?
I remember
a similar incident
in the early 1990s involving South Africa's Peter Kirsten (older brother of Gary Kirsten). Kirsten was fined for his angry reaction to the run-out but outraged South African fans collected the money to pay his fine.
It would appear that this is the first time a player has been run out in that manner in over 20 years.

I m terribly pissed off we lost today but the better ODI team won.
I was watching this live and I have no real problems with this as Senanayeke warned him, although I do not think he has to, and sadly my man did it again and the Lankan was quite within his rights to do what he did.
Quite elementary and a school boy faux pas.....
Our batting was so useless again and not to have batted teh last 10 balls costed us dearly.
Bring on the Tests and hope we dish out a convincing series win.
Who was run out this way 20 years ago?

Kapil Dev runs out Peter Kirsten
Third or fourth time so valid except, today, once in your delivery stride it cannot be out. Delivery stride meaning when the back foot lands in the stride to deiver the ball.
Not sure what the rule was then and have no inclination to research it at 1:04am!!!
As a batsman, I always left my bat grounded and and stretchd out.

According to
this report
, the rule has been changed and now allows for the run-out provided the bowler has not completed his usual delivery swing.

He's within his "rights" - but it's a spirit of the game thing, it has been so for a while now. Although Mahela says he's warned Buttler a couple of times before. In which case I would say it's more Buttler's fault tbh.

I mean Angelo, not Mahela. Goddamnit.
Either way I don't think it'd have made a HUGE difference in the context of the game anyway. SL pretty much cruised to that win.
