Attorney Albert Baldeo on Rohan Kanhai

"Rohan Kanhai, my boyhood hero, was undoubtedly the most extraordinary batsman the West Indies has ever produced, one who could eviserate any attack in the world when he chose to. Whereas other batsmen could wear down an attack, Kanhai would dissect it with clinical precision. There was beauty in his craft, so much different in the method of annihilation. Poetry, rather than prose, ballet, rather than dance. Artistry, rather than sheer power, although this never compromised the force with which he hit the ball. He glided in riveting strokeplay, batting with the artistry of a virtuoso. He did not have the superlative statistics nor the sheer all-round cricketing genius of Garfield Sobers, the awesome power of Viv Richards, Clyde Walcott, Clive Lloyd or Gordon Greenidge, the classical poise of Sachin Tendulkar or Frank Worrell, or the steadfastness of George Headley or Steve Waugh. Nor did he have the impregnable technique or patience of Geoff Boycott, Jack Hobbs or Sunil Gavaskar, the insatiable appetite for runs like Don Bradman, the grace of Greg Chappell or Zaheer Abbas or the oriental calm of Majid Khan. Nor did his interaction with the game of cricket spawn changes to the socio-political structures of society and effect reforms of a radical nature as Sir Learie Constantine’s and Sir W.G. Grace’s did. Nor did he assume superstar status like Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar. Nor did he achieve batting statistics to propel him to the type of immortality attained by Sir Don Bradman, Gavaskar or Tendulkar. Yet, he possessed a combination of batting prowess and sportsmanship above and beyond the reach of all of these great players to such an unparalleled degree that has never been seen in the game of cricket and perhaps will never be equaled. His arrival to the wicket heralded both hush and expectancy. Bars closed as all looked to the drama that was about to unfold before a Kanhai innings.

His creative genius surpassed any other batsman in the game, and his flamboyance was spellbinding. There were times in his batting artistry where he touched heights of batsmanship beyond the reach of any batsman, such as in the execution of his unique “roti shot,” or falling hook shot, sometimes played off the eyebrows, the half-pull, half-sweep style stroke, the flick off the toes which dissected the on-side field, the reverse sweep off the leg stump or the late cut off the off stump. Cricketers like him invented and pioneered many innovations to the game which have made it richer and dearer to spectators. As commentators would say, “many batsmen may enter the same cathedral of batsmanship with Kanhai, but will not be allowed to sit in the same pue.” In Michael Manley’s book, “A History of West Indian cricket,” Kanhai is photographed sitting with George Headley and Everton Weekes, and that is how they may sit in the front pue of that proverbial cathedral.

In his book “Idols,” Sunil Gavaskar, whose gigantic batting feats have not only eugolized him in calypso but also immortalized him in a manner second to none, said this of Kanhai: “Rohan Kanhai is quite simply the greatest batsman I have ever seen. What does one write about one's hero, one's idol, one for whom there is so much admiration? To say that he is the greatest batsman I have ever seen so far is to put it mildly. A controversial statement perhaps, considering that there have been so many outstanding batsmen, and some great batsmen that I have played with and against. But, having seen them all, there is no doubt in my mind that Rohan Kanhai was quite simply the best of them all. Sir Gary Sobers came quite close to being the best batsman, but he was the greatest cricketer ever, and could do just about anything. But as a batsman, I thought Rohan Kanhai was just a little bit better." In his book “Living For Cricket,” the revered Clive Lloyd definitively said that he regarded Kanhai as “the finest batsman Guyana has produced.”

He lost me when I read the above and I wonder what he really knows about Kanhai. Did he ever see this man bat? Yes he is right about his statistical comparison but he is straddling eras.

I agree wid your opinion Mail regarding this idiot Albert Baldeo  . Kanhai did something that made  his batting  statistics  irrelevant . He instilled pride in Indo Guyanese people who for so long was made to  feel like second  class people  in their own country .

Kwams,

Importantly, Kanhai was a role model who reestablished pride and support part of the Guyanese population who would otherwise feel disenfranchised and discriminated against!

I do not want to underestimate Kanhai's impact as a social innovator as it was very important.

As a Cricketer, he was the first of a kind. Yes you had Headley but Kanhai bought a different panache!

His gravitas, his calmness, his innovative stroke play and his sheer ability to destroy any attack were traits I had not known or read about before. Even Don was not a destroyer, he was an accumulator. One chap who seemed to be adestroyer was a gentleman called Victor Trumper!

Kanhai is always the answer for the best Windian batsman, if you ask Club Cricketers and fans alike in the UK (of a certain age).

For me the man was a Colossus!!!

"the awesome power of Viv Richards, Clyde Walcott, Clive Lloyd or Gordon Greenidge"

Everton Weekes was the  most powerful hitter than all of those 4 :

My father tells me Rohan was a harder hitter than Everton !

I believe my dad : over Albert Baldeo  :P

Your dad is smart man and knows his cricket.

Fred Trueman said the same thing...to Tony Cozier in 76.  I still remember those words...

"Rohan Kanhai is still the hardest hitter in West Indies"

Keep in mind Rohan had retired already but playing in English County.

I saw Kanhai many many times, and even more for Warwickshire, the fella was a maestro.
I do not mean to be rude about any one but he did not strut, he was humble on the pitch, he went about his business but he knew.

Kanhai was neither big nor small but he had power when required.

I my lifetime, apart from my English favourites, Kanhai was a colossus amongst men.

He was the real deal, the business and under appreciated in his biased diaspora!
If you are not careful he will be diminished much like Stolly, Davis, Rae etc.

Sorry guys for going on but my definition of greatness is ability (which those special ones are born with), industriousness to harness that gift, humanity, respect etc.

Viv had natural abilities, that is unquestionable, but he lacked all of the other skills.

Kanhai dominated without any arrogance and in that is perhaps the Asian way. Humility!

This is the danger of comparing eras but for me Kanhai transcends eras, because of the close proximity to Viv, but Kanhai was the first of a kind.

If any of you get clips from from Sabina 1971 you would see the diversity of  Kanhai's genius and this is not the only one, except 1971 saw the first ever series win by India and it was away from home.

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0
