BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - NEVISIAN batsman Kieran Powell has been touted as a future leader for the West Indies team by President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Dave Cameron.
Speaking on Sportsmax Zone on Monday (May 19), Cameron blasted former WICB CEO Ernest Hilaire’s comments, stating that the WICB practices “narrow nationalism†that led to the axing of Darren Sammy as Captain.
The St. Lucian said that as a result, insularity and “narrow nationalismâ€, continued to permeate West Indies cricket.
“I think in West Indies cricket we know what has to be done. What is needed is the will to make it happen and to stay the course,†Hilaire said in an interview following the sacking of Darren Sammy as Test Captain.
On Monday however, Cameron scrutinised the former CEO’s comments, stating that Nevisian Powell has been earmarked as a future captain of the regional side.
“Kieran Powell from Nevis is somebody we are looking at and I can say that publicly for the leadership of the team. He has captained our ‘A’team...Nevis is probably the smallest island in the region and we have Kirk Edwards as well as another potential leader for the team.â€
Last year Powell captained the West Indies ‘A’ team to victory over India ‘A’ team and is the current Leeward Islands Captain.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Is it appropriate to be discussing future captaincy given you have very recently elected a new one? I think not.
Sure you need succession planning but I find this in poor taste.
Cameron could have given the best response by saying nothing. What Hillaire said should not have been dignified with a response.
How can Hillaire talk about insularity when the selection of Sammy, who previously could not get into the team and a fellow Lucian, was just that.
Cameron will be chewed up by Hillaire in the war of words and the former does not strike me as that smart.

Cameron's response and example given are poor.
Insularity and "narrow nationalism" are very evident throughout the Caribbean so Hialire aint saying nothing new.
However he is basically claiming that he and Hunte were above that. Most folks know that is a lie and Cameron does not need to respond to anything Hilaire says

Cameron is an ass. If Powell was living up to his potential as a batsman then I could understand. I hope he comes good because West Indies is badly in need of two new good openers.

Well Cameron only used that to show that "narrow nationalism" was not prevalent.
But there was no need for him to respond to Hilaire"s comments.

Hilaire is the Jackass for criticising the decision of his Successor :
poor diplomatic skill set from the London diplomat ..
must be a small islander small mind mentality

Cameron probably nah have clean hands either but is so it go in WI cricket.
Dem all focusing on de wrong issues. Until there is an improvement in first class cricket there will be no improvement in the test side.
However as long as men could continue to feed at the trough.................
