Respect CCJ ruling; find agreement on way forward – Envoys urge

The Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), launched on January 12, says Tuesday’s rulings by the Caribbean Court of Justice was “just.”

However, LJP Leader Lenox Shuman said he believes President David Granger is using the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) as another tactic to delay the holding of General and Regional Elections.

“It seems as though the President wants to use GECOM as another stalling tactic to moving this nation forward,” Shuman said at a press conference at Kingston, Georgetown on Tuesday.

Chairman of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Joseph Harmon on Tuesday declared that Moses Nagamootoo is “the best prime minister”, days after the Alliance For Change (AFC) overwhelmingly endorsed party leader , Khemraj Ramjattan to be President Granger’s number two man.

Addressing a government outreach at Bartica, Harmon described Nagamootoo as “royalty” and went on to laud him. “The best Prime Minister we have had in this country for the last twenty-seven years, Moses Nagamootoo,” he said to sustained applause.

“I don’t care where you bring any other body from before him, that is the best Prime Minister we have had for the last twenty-seven years and we are proud of our prime minister, we are proud of our coalition partners and we are proud of the process which produces our leaders in our coalition,” he said.

Nagamootoo said despite the CCJ’s ruling, “it would be improper to force upon the people of Guyana that they go to the polls to elect a government without a voters’ list. It cannot happen anyway.”

President David Granger Wednesday said he will write the Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo to resume talks on appointing a new chairman of the country’s elections body, but he said he wanted to hear from the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on why the process he used was flawed.

Despite the CCJ setting out the reasons why the process was flawed and unconstitutional, the President insisted that he has never gone “outside” of what the Constitution says.

“I have to select someone who is fit and proper,” Granger told reporters at the Ministry of the Presidency on Wednesday.

“They must let me know what the flaw is,” Granger said of the CCJ, noting that he will wait for the consequential orders of the Court.
