* A 50 test average is viewed as a reasonable benchmark for greatness!

* So it is reasonable to use scores over fifty in any definition of batting consistency.

* And dont forget the conversion rate guage---it pertains to fifties that are converted into hundreds.

Let's check the batting consistency of these 4:

36.5%...Tendulkar's consistency---51 100 + 66 50s in 320 innings

35.8%...Ponting's consisteny---41 100s + 62 50s in 287 innings

35.3%...Shiv's consistency---27 hundeds + 61 50s in 249 innings

34.6%...Dravid's consisency---36 100s + 63 50s in 286 innings


In terms of scores over fifty as a % of innings played---those 4 batsmen---all with averages over 50---their batting consistency was pretty close---the range was 34.6% to 36.5%

Do the calculation and you'll find that Shiv needed to convert at least 4 more fifties inorder to have a 35% conversion rate---Viv Richards had a 35% conversion rate.

Shiv did NOT have the supporting cast as Sachin , Rahul ( each other ) and Ponting !

Ponting 3; Dravid 3.

And check this---Tendulkar has zero not outs between 70 and 99.

By the way, Shiv also has 2 not outs in the 80s and 2 not outs in the 90s.

If Shiv were able to convert 4 of his 9 not outs between 70 and 90---if he had not run out of partners---his conversion rate would be 35% instead of 31%.

Oh well! Shiv's NOT OUTS have helped him get to a 51.67 test average.

I don't know whether Shiv was better than Sachin... but I can say for sure that Shiv was a better batsmen, while playing against quality opposition. A large number of Sachin's 100s were against weak teams such as Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and NZL (when they were weak, way back in the 1990s).


Also Shiv was better while batting against quality pace bowling (McGrath / Akram.etc).

Shiv is definitely one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game, but I think the comparison cannot be done. They've scored runs against different teams in different conditions. I player you forgot to mention is Brian Lara. He was an excellent player. Please post the comparison of his stats with all of the above. I'd love to see that.
