Mark ramprakash

Mark Ramprakash was a batsman of rare talent, combining a classically English technique with an un-English intensity. A beast of a batsman at County cricket made his Test debut in 1991 along with Graeme Hick, another prolific run scorer in domestic cricket. Ramprakash made his First class debut for Middlesex at the age of 17 & he also captained England under-19s.

A batsman oozing class & natural ability, Ramprakash bows out with an incredible 35,659 First class runs at an average of 53.14 including 114 centuries & 147 half centuries in 461 matches. In 407 List A matches, he scored 13,273 at an average of 40.22 including 17 centuries & 85 half centuries.

He was the 25th player in history to score 100 First class centuries. However in 52 Tests over 11 years, he scored only 2,350 runs at an average of 27.32 with just 2 centuries & 12 half centuries.

He was such a talent, Ramprakash was given plenty of chances to redeem himself. But he took 16 innings to make his first half century & 38 innings over seven years to finally reach three figures.

Ramprakash did enjoy some success against Australia, scoring 933 runs at an average of 42.40 in 12 Tests. But he struggled against a strong fast bowling attack of West Indies, having played the most number of Tests against them in his career. Ramprakash could only score 591 runs against West Indies in 16 Tests at an average of 21.10 with just one century.

It remains one of the great enigmas of English cricket-why Mark Ramprakash never really cut if for England 🏏
