During the 1980s and 1990s, several cricketers earned England call-ups through strong performances in county cricket. On this day in 1988, one of those players was Guyanese-born Monte Lynch, who made his ODI debut for England.
Lynch moved to England with his family as a child and began his cricket journey with Surrey. In the early 1980s, he briefly returned to Guyana and represented his home country in the Shell Shield competition, where he continued to build a reputation as an aggressive batsman.
His career, however, took a controversial turn when he joined the West Indies rebel tour of South Africa during the apartheid era. The players involved were heavily punished by West Indies cricket and handed lifetime bans. England’s approach was less severe, with players receiving three-year suspensions instead. That decision left the door slightly open for Lynch, who qualified to play for England through residency.
After serving his ban, he eventually earned his opportunity with the England ODI side. Known for his hard-hitting style, Lynch was selected for a series against the touring West Indies team — an interesting moment given his own Caribbean background.
On this day in 1988, he made his international debut, but it proved to be a difficult start. Lynch faced only two deliveries before being run out for a duck. He played two more ODIs in the series, scoring 2 and 6, and was not selected for England again.
Although his international career was brief, Lynch continued to enjoy a long and successful county career. By the time he retired, he had scored 18,325 first-class runs and 8,483 List A runs, including a combined 46 centuries.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
