One of the most controversial sledging incidents in cricket history took place during the 4th Test between Australia and West Indies in Antigua, 2003, at a time when tensions were already high in a gripping run chase.
In the middle of the contest, Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath tried to unsettle young West Indies batter Ramnaresh Sarwan with a crude remark:
“What does Brian Lara’s d** taste like?”*
Sarwan’s reply came instantly and just as sharply:
“I don’t know… ask your wife.”
What followed changed the tone completely. McGrath, whose wife was seriously ill at the time, reacted with visible anger and responded:
“If you ever f**king mention my wife again, I’ll f**king rip your f**king throat out.”
The incident quickly escalated, umpire intervention, and drew widespread criticism for crossing the line from competitive sledging into deeply personal territory.
Despite the heated exchange, the match itself became historic, as West Indies completed a record fourth-innings chase of 418 runs.
Both players later apologised, but the Antigua clash remains a defining example of how quickly on-field banter can turn into one of cricket’s ugliest moments.
