Sunil Gavaskar Is Perhaps the greatest Opening Batsman of all time of Test Cricket .His greatness can not be Judged on his Statistics though very nice but many have overtaken it .His greatness can be be Judged on his Performance against Quality of Bowlers he faced on different Pitches and Successful.
He is the only Batsman who faced fastest bowlers of West Indies and Australia besides England,Pakistan and New Zealand.Just See the names of fast bowlers he faced Andy Roberts ,Michael Holding,Malcolm Marshall ,Joel Garner ,Jeff Thompson,Dennis Lillee ,Richard Hedlee ,Bob Willis ,Chris Old ,Ian Botham ,Imran Khan and Sarfaraz Nawaz .
And he has faced Quality Spinners like Lance Gibbs ,Derek Underwood ,Iqbal Qasim ,Abdul Qadir and Scored heavily against all .
He has Scored runs in every Country on different types of Pitches whether made for fast bowlers or Spinners.In his entire Career he was never in bad patch form , he might have less runs during Some Period but never Completely out of form.That was his uniqueness.He is The First batsman to Score 10000 Runs and Score more than 30 Centuries in Test Cricket.
Only drawback was he was not Succeeded in ODI but he was adopting quick Scoring Technique at the end of his Career .
If we look all these aspects ,then he can be rated as best Opening Test batsman of all time.
After retirement from Cricket he has entered in Commentator’s field and he is one of The best Commentator .He is fearless in expressing views on any topic of Cricket also.
