Despite series loss, Pollard optimistic about West Indies future
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard is taking a positive outlook on his team’s four-wicket loss to India in Cuttack on Sunday.
India, behind Captain Virat Kohli’s 85, and half-centuries from KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma successful chased a target of 316 set by the West Indies with eight balls to spare.
Keemo Paul was the best of the West Indies bowlers with 3 for 59 but it was his no-ball four balls into his final over that gave India the victory.
Pollard said the West Indies gave it their best shot.
“I don't think there's much to be disappointed about,” the West Indies captain said after his side’s 2-1 series loss.
“Obviously results matter but if you look at where we are from, where we've come from, I can't fault the boys, they showed their mettle.”
Nicholas Pooran led the West Indies batting with a 64-ball 89 that along with Pollard’s unbeaten 74 from just 51 balls propelled the West Indies from 144 for 4 to a potentially match-winning 315 for 5 from their 50 overs after being asked to bat.
Shai Hope, who continued his good form with the bat, with 42 while Shimron Hetmeyer’s cameo of 37, also contributed to the West Indies’ competitive total.
Pollard said his side showed what was possible and suggested that the future seems bright.
“Well done to India and we competing with them was a positive,” he said.
“Lot of exciting talent here. It's just a matter of allowing them to express themselves. There's a lot to look forward to in the near future. I'm very, very excited of what's to come.”
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
