Jamaica Scorpions captain Rovman Powell reminded opponents in the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup that he can be a fearsome batsman who can take a game away when he slammed an unbeaten century to help his team to a four-wicket victory over Canada at Warner Park on Saturday.
Canada bat first and scored 243-6 from their 50 overs, but had to watch as the total was overhauled by the Scorpions, who reached 247-6 in 43.5 overs.
Canada got to their total thanks to a number of good starts, Nitish Kumar’s 65 from 60 deliveries being the best of them.
Opener Jeet Mehta scored 33, Kanawarpal Tathgur scored 39, while Sereya Movva and Kaleem Sana were left unbeaten on 26 and 23 respectively.
The batsmen achieved the total against the bowling of Dennis Buli, 2-47, Andre McCarthy, 2-62, and Oshane Thomas, 2-61.
When the Scorpions replied they got off to the worst start imaginable, as Aldane Thomas and Jermaine Blackwood both fell without scoring.
Assad Fudadin, 37, and Andre McCarthy, 23, tried to repair the damage, partnering for 52 runs, before McCarthy went.
Nkrumah Bonner and Fudadin then tried to carry on the repair job, scoring 44 between them before the latter went.
Bonner, who went on to score an even 50 from 58 deliveries was instrumental in a 92-run partnership with Powell, before the latter, whose even 100 came from just 68 deliveries, finished the job with Dennis Smith (16) and Derval Green (5 not out).
Along the way, Powell plundered eight sixes and four boundaries on his way to the total.
