The last 10 times Joe Root has reached fifty, he's failed to go on and score a century.

His last hundred was against West Indies in the day/night Test here last year.

Eng 153-3

Jonny Bairstow isn't going to let Ashwin settle. He hits a positive drive on the first ball and then heaves one over the infield to the mid-wicket boundary a ball later.

Eng 242-6

Stokes 20, Curran 1

Ravichandran Ashwin will want six deliveries at Sam Curran here.

The India off-spinner gets them but young Curran keeps out all six well. A maiden.

Eng 250-7

Adil Rashid plays a fairly nervy clip in the air but it's wide of mid-wicket and he picks up two.

That's 250 up for the hosts. About four more wickets down than they looked like being at this point though.

The new ball is available but India aren't going to take it for now as Ravichandran Ashwin stays in the attack.

India have had a nice balance when bowling to Sam Curran. The seamers have hung the ball out wide, whilst Ashwin attacks his stump. They're playing on his patience, given that Curran averages 78.50 with the cut shot in FC cricket, and won't leave it alone for long.

England have missed a massive opportunity.

There is still plenty of movement but the Indian seamers haven't bowled brilliantly.

England should take heart that there is still movement.

The moment of inspiration came from India's captain Virat Kohli who ran out Joe Root
with a direct hit from deep midwicket- once again between 50 and 100 -
after which this side's biggest match-winner R Ashwin
took out the dangerous duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler.
