VEMEN Walters has shut down the prospect of a presidential bid when the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) holds new elections on Sunday.
Walters yesterday confirmed to Chronicle Sport that he is not running for the BCB’s top post saying his sights are instead set on other commitments.
“Look, I will not run because of other pressing commitments,” he quipped.
Walters’ intention previously had garnered the support from a number of influential figures in the local cricket fraternity, who have become increasingly frustrated with the current state of the sport in the Ancient County.
A former cricket official in the county, who had spoken on condition of anonymity, believes Walters, who is the holder of a Masters in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Management is the most suitable candidate and reckons his wealth of expertise can be an asset at the BCB.
Another executive member of a leading cricket club in Berbice, who had also spoken on condition of anonymity, said Walters, who is currently the Human Resources Manager at the Albion Estate, can definitely turn things around because he has the experience and certainly the passion for the sport.
As it stands, former president Dhierandranauth Somwaru is the only man to declare his intention to run for the board’s top post.
Sunday’s elections will be held since the result of the October 8, 2017 elections was annulled by the Court on December 18 last.
Somwaru was declared the winner of last October’s vote, but the majority of the clubs and sub-association members complained of widespread irregularities.
They had claimed that the elections then were not held in keeping with the Cricket Administration Act, since according to them, some 22 voting delegates were debarred from or refused to take part in voting for various reasons.
This had subsequently led to the filing of legal proceedings.
High Court Judge Navindra Singh, subsequently ordered new elections on February 18. Sunday’s elections will be held at the New Amsterdam Town Hall from 11:00hrs.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
