Fifties from Braithwaite, Hetmyer fail to save Windies from defeat
N/ Zealand win by inns & 67runs in 4 days
Half-centuries from vice-captain Kraigg Brathwaite and rookie Shimron Hetmyer failed to West Indies from a crushing innings and 67-run defeat against host New Zealand in the First Test on sunday after wicketkeeper Tom Blundell’s hundred on debut left the Black Caps in an impregnable position going into the penultimate day at the Basin Reserve.
At stumps on day three, the Caribbean side were 214-2 in their second innings but still 172 runs adrift of avoiding an innings defeat and going one down in the two-match series.
The 20-year-old Guyanese Shemron Hetmyer, in his fourth Test, struck a bold 66 to post his maiden Test half century, while opener Kieran Powell once again got a start but failed to carry on when he perished for 40.
Brathwaite was unbeaten on 79 and partnered by Shai Hope on 24, with the pair featuring in a 48-run unbroken third wicket stand at the close of day three.
On they added only 105 to the overnight score, and lost their last seven wickets for 62 runs, in the space of 20 overs as only Roston Chase (18), Shane Dowrich (18) and fast bowler Miguel Cummings (14) reached double figures.
The New Zealand pacers shared the wickets as the opposition perished to a series of poor strokes. Matt Henry added the wicket of Chase to the two he claimed on day three, to finish with figures of 3-57. Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme and Neil Wagner who had a seven-wicket haul in the first innings, claimed two wickets each.

134 was a hell of a handicap to overcome when the Kiwi scored big as the wicket became a road.
the Kiwi know their conditions. they did not send the west indies in for nothing on winning the toss. the Kiwi bowlers got the best of the wicket for bowling on the first day.
that is how things supposed to go anyway. to the home side the advantage...a fact the west indies must always bear in mind. the next day always comes
