Alastair Cook fell to the second ball of England’s Ashes tour before England’s much-maligned top-order helped the visitors recover and end the first day of their opening warm-up match on 349-6.
After Cook's early dismissal, Mark Stoneman (85) and James Vince (82) put on 153 for the second wicket but after both were removed within sight of their centuries, captain Joe Root was caught behind for just nine.
However, Dawid Malan (56) and Gary Ballance (51) then added 104, both hitting fifties, before retiring to allow Jonny Bairstow (36no) and Chris Woakes (25no) time at the crease.
All the talk prior to the match was about how Cook and Root will have to carry a fragile top five this winter but it was something of a role reversal on day one at the WACA as Cook edged Nathan Coulter-Nile behind in the first over.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
