Alastair Cook has resigned as England Test captain after a record 59 matches in charge.
The 32-year-old Essex batsman took the role in August 2012 and led his country to Ashes victories in 2013 and 2015.
However, during last year's
4-0 Test series defeat in India
he admitted to having "questions" over his role.
"Stepping down has been an incredibly hard decision but I know this is the correct decision for me and at the right time for the team," said Cook.
"Playing for England really is a privilege and I hope to carry on as a Test player, making a full contribution and helping the next England captain and the team however I can."
Cook is England's highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 11,057, while his 140 Test appearances and 30 centuries are also England records.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

I am very sorry to see Alastair Cook step down as captain. Whatever some others are saying about him,I believe he was a man of great integrity. I also believe that his captaincy improved during his time in charge. The rationale behind this decision was clearly that it might improve his batting form now. I just hope captaincy doesn't damage Joe Root's batting too much (he'll obviously replace Cook)

Some people concerned about the captaincy having a negative effect on Root's batting but I think it could have the opposite effect and may make him bat more responsibly and not throw his wicket away as much.
Look at Kohli's record since he became India captain. He's taken his game to another level. No reason why Root couldn't do the same.
