Brilliant Narine keeps Renegades in hunt
Published on Jan 20, 2017, 10:01 pm AST

GOOD SPELL: Sunil Narine.

BRISBANE

West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine grabbed two wickets in a brilliant penultimate over as his Melbourne Renegades snatched an exciting one-run victory over Brisbane Heat, to remain in playoff contention in the Big Bash League, yesterday.
With Heat requiring 26 runs from the last two overs in pursuit of 200 for victory at the Gabba, Narine struck off the first ball of the 19th over when he removed Marnus Labuschagne (1) to a catch in the deep off a top-edged slog-sweep.

Three balls later, with as many runs added, Narine accounted for Jack Wildermuth for a first-ball “duck”, caught by wicketkeeper Andrew Harriott running around to silly point as the batsman miscued an attempted big hit.

Pivotally, Narine conceded just eight runs from the over, leaving Heat under pressure to get a challenging 18 runs off the last.
Hope flickered briefly when Joe Burns (35) lashed two consecutive sixes off seamer Nathan Rimmington (2-37) but with three needed from the last ball, Mitchell Swepson was dramatically run out off a wide as Heat were dismissed for 198 with one delivery remaining.

Narine finished with two for 38 to take his tally for the tournament in eight matches to 13 wickets.

Opener New Zealander Brendon McCullum stroked 64 from 40 deliveries to get Heat off to a flyer while Ben Cutting chipped in with 35.
Earlier, captain and opener Aaron Finch slammed 71 off 35 deliveries, posting a swift 106 for the first wicket with Marcus Harris who struck 48, as Renegades got off a great start.
Renegades are one of four sides on eight points but lie fourth in the tables while Heat remain top on 10 points.

Badree praises Cricket Australia

Leg-spinner Samuel Badree
West Indies leg-spinner Samuel Badree has come out in praise of Cricket Australia (CA) for organising what he describes as a ‘super’ tournament in speaking about the ongoing Big Bash.

Badree who has been contracted to play for the Brisbane Heat is not playing these days due to injury but has had a wonderful time ‘Down Under’.

Speaking to Guardian Media Sport from Brisbane he said: “This is a super tournament that keeps growing every year. It is amazing to see the crowds that show up but not surprising as the package delivered to them is quite spectacular.” The massive Aussie grounds are near packed on any given day that matches are played in the Big Bash as the crowds have really taken to the format.

Badree continued: “Quite apart from quality cricket, big name players, great weather, school holidays and huge interest in the game here, the families and spectators are treated with off field entertainment that really makes them want to come back.”

He was particularly impressed with what he has seen at his home venue in Brisbane: “At the Gabba for instance we have a lazer light show, fireworks and player interactions, dance cam, kiss cam and live twitter feeds being read out and oh...a pool deck as well.

“So CA have really packaged it well for all audiences and the marketing has been incredible. Again, I’ve really enjoyed my time here competing and playing with some of the best in the world.

“As for my injury, I am still recovering.” The leg spinner is key to the success of the Heat but has used his time wisely off the field to develop other aspects of his game.
