CLEARED: Kevon Cooper
Despite not making the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force team, Kevon Cooper, along with his Queen's Park Cricket Club teammates Akeal Hosein and Daron Cruickshank could still make an appearance in the Regional Super50 after being selected in the Leeward Islands Hurricanes squad for the tournament which bowls off on January 24.
Cruickshank played for the Hurricanes in last year's competition while Cooper and Hosein represented the Red Force. QPCC coach David Furlonge told the Express yesterday that the trio will be leaving today to join up with the Hurricanes.
The Parkites' coach also noted that Cooper, whose bowling action came under scrutiny again during the Bangladesh Premier League T20 late last year, has been cleared after undergoing tests at an ICC sanctioned testing centre in Chennai, India in December.
Cooper's Queen's Park Cricket Club coach David Furlonge revealed that the all-rounder was indeed cleared to play and was also called for Trinidad and Tobago Red Force trials ahead of the West Indies Cricket Board Super50 which bowls off later this month.
Cooper did not make the T&T Super50 team which was announced on Friday. Furlonge revealed that Kevon Cooper went to India and did a bowling test at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, India and passed the test.
“His action is within the legal limit and the results were sent to the various Boards including the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board letting them know that while his action might look suspect he is really within the legal limit of bowling,†the coach added.
Furlonge explained that the test was not a mandatory one and that Cooper was put through a some rigorous exercises that replicated match conditions. He said Cooper's elbow extension was within the 15 degrees permitted limit in all the deliveries that were tested.
The Leewards were drawn in Group A along with the reigning champions Red Force Windward Islands Volcanoes, West Indies Under-19s and English county side, Kent.
Group B will comprise last year's losing finalists Barbados Pride, Jamaica Scorpions, Guyana Jaguars, Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners and ICC Americas.
