PORT OF SPAIN

Yannic Cariah smashed an unbeaten 99 and Evin Lewis hit an aggressive 80, as the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force resumed preparations for the regional Super50 tournament with a 50-over trial match at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, yesterday,
Cariah faced 119 balls and struck one six and eight fours while Lewis blasted six sixes and six fours in a 54-ball knock, to lead the Marlon Richards XI to 275 for six off 48.2 overs after they were set a revised target against the Yannick Ottley XI.

The Red Force management opted to revise the target for Richards’ team after Ottley’s men were dismissed for a 147 off 42.5 overs.
Spinner Ricky Jaipaul (3/15) and Imran Khan (3/19) led the rout. Nicholas Alexis top-scored for Ottley’s team, scoring 56 off 76 balls, including two sixes and a four while Kjorn Ottley was the only other batsmen to reach double figures, hitting 43 off 77 balls, with three fours.

Pacer Ravi Rampaul was a welcome sight on the cricket field yesterday, as he turned out for Kyle Hope’s XI against Marlon Richards’ XI in the second national trial for the upcoming Regional Super50 cricket series at the Queen’s Park Oval.

Rampaul who has been playing County cricket since coming out of the West Indies scene, is looking to make a comeback and yesterday 1/21 of five overs in his spell.

Batting first, Kyle Hope’s XI made a solid 255 for six wickets with wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo scoring an unbeaten 45. He forged a useful partnership of 60 with West Indies Under-19 player Jyd Goolie, who made 42 not out. Also among the runs were Ewart Nicholson 36, Yannick Ottley 36, Hope himself 33 and Kjorn Ottley 27. Spinner Ricky Jaipaul continued to impress with 2/33, while all rounder Roshon Primus grabbed 2/27.

In reply, Richards’ XI was bowled out for 115 in 31.2 overs with Jason Mohammed getting 20 and the inform Yannic Carriah 21. Spinner Bryan Charles took 3/19, Philton Williams 2/14 and Khary Pierre 2/18.

Pollard’s rot continues as Strikers lose *
Published on Jan 2, 2017, 9:00 pm AST

Kieron Pollard and Chris Jordan both failed as Adelaide Strikers slumped to their third loss of the Big Bash League with an eight-wicket defeat to Hobart Hurricanes yesterday.

Sent in at Bellerive Oval, Strikers were dismissed for 143 off their 20 overs and Hurricanes wasted little time in overhauling the target with 14 deliveries remaining in the innings.

The result left Strikers one from bottom of the eight-team standings on two points from their lone win in four outings. Only reigning champions Sydney Thunder—who boasts West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell in their ranks—have a worse record, as they are winless in four games.

Growing pains *
Jaggesar comes to terms with a whirlwind 2016

The past 12 months have been anything but predictable for 30-year-old Trinidad and Tobago off-spinner Jon Russ Jaggesar.

The cricketer from Hermitage Village in South Trinidad rose through the ranks quickly after getting an opportunity in the Nagico Super50 in January. He helped T&T to win that tournament, was subsequently selected on the Red Force four-day team before earning a call-up to the West Indies A team. He was also part of the Jamaica Tallawahs squad that won the 2016 Caribbean Premier League Twenty20.

But all of this wasn't even on the spinner's mind in 2015. As a matter of fact, the Caldrac cricketer was still trying to break into the Red Force set-up at the time.

“Last year I did not really see myself doing some of the things that I have done in 2016,” Jaggesar told the Express. “I mean I had hope that someday if things worked out I would get some opportunities but I never thought I would have been travelling so much and playing cricket in a different part of the world in such a short space of time.”

Jaggesar travelled with the West Indies A team to Sri Lanka where they defeated the home team to clinch the limited overs series and also toured the Caribbean with the Tallawahs for the CPL.
