South African captain Faf du Plessis and his use of sweets to augment the polishing of the ball, in clear defiance of law 42.3 which prohibits the application of any artificial substance to the surface of the ball, highlights some of the general misperceptions.
Du Plessis antics may all have been in vain, according to Dr. Mehta.
“In my opinion, the use of a sugary substance does not provide any obvious advantage. The natural substances are good enough to do the job. So this whole issue of using sweets is more hype than anything else.â€
