Sohail Khan desperate for a 5-for. Appealing for anything and everything at this point. Not sure what Finn and Anderson are doing. Might as well swing the bat - either add a few more runs or get out and have three overs at Pakistan tonight.

Sohail Khan gets his 5-for, and well deserved too. He was magnificent today. He looked to be in agony at the end, but he still kept steaming in. England 297 all out.

Very disappointing with our poor batting performance....very soft dismissals but Khan was McGrath like in his line.
Pakistan would be feeling quite chuffed. Stokesy says days 2 and 3 will speed up so maybe that will work in our favour.
Loose batting and even Mo, having done well and batted for some time, gave it away albeit against the new ball.
Just saw the fall of wickets but look forward to the highlights.

England's batsmen certainly didn't cover themselves in glory. Too many loose shots leading to their dismissal, Cook and Woakes the exception. The Cook dismissal was a tough one as he was looking in mighty good form and scoring quickly.
With that said, I would have been satisfied with 300 runs if you had offered me that at the start of the days play. The average first innings score at Edgbaston over the last decade has been a paltry 225.
The last time a team batting first won at Edgbaston was all the way back in 2005 - 8 Test matches ago.

I will check the lunchtime scores but feel the Pakistanis are just going to get dug in.

It seems that a lack of consistency is still something that England can't get over. We always seem to go from a poor performance with the bat but a great bowling performance to the exact opposite and smash teams out of the park but then collapse in the field.
The batting performance in this innings was poor and if the opposition are causing the mistakes and putting the pressure on then you can understand it but on this occasion England manage to trip themselves up, as so often is the case.

It very much looks as though the bat second and win streak at Edgbaston will continue. Pakistan well and truly on top right now. The drop by Joe Root proving to be most costly. England need a huge effort after tea to keep themselves in this one.

Suicidal too. Never a run there. Feel bad for young Sami Aslam. Within touching distance of a deserved maiden Test century.
