Wes’ Hall sense of humor
During a press conference, Hall was asked about West Indies fast bowlers aggression...
What is defined as being aggressive? Is it a stare?†Hall asked. The West Indian also said that being aggressive should not be associated only with pacemen. “Lance Gibbs (off-spinner) was one of the most aggressive bowlers. Some batsmen are so confident that it borders on aggression. Viv Richards was such a relaxed and confident man. But when he chewed gum and walked into bat, he looked arrogant,†Hall said.
Wes’ funny bone
Once I was bowling to Bobby Simpson and as I was running in he asked the umpire to move the sight screen a few metres to the right. Those days the sight screen didn’t move at the push of a button and it took a lot of effort by a lot of men to move it. Once it was in place Simpson was not happy and asked for it to be moved towards the left. It was duly done. A bit irritated the umpire asked Simpson: Do you want anything else? To which Simpson replied. “Now put the sight screen between that b**** bas**** and me.†However, those days the spirit between the players was so good that I didn’t take it as a racist comment. We remained mates.
On the eve of the 1966/67 Chennai Test, Farokh Engineer was to open the innings. He was not having the best of times and failure would have meant that he would not be selected for India’s tour of England that followed. I gave him a book titled the Power of Positive thinking. The next day he came out and scored a century and was in fine touch. When my skipper Garry Sobers found out that I had given him the book, he was pretty furious. Maybe the book helped Engineer, I don’t know. But what I learnt was that too much of camaraderie may not be a good thing all the time.

Some batsman I feel do need to man up a bit when it comes to them complaining about a bowler being too aggressive. For me it's a sport, and in that sense also a competitive match, so as long as the bowler isn't overly aggressive then I think it's up to the batsman to just take it on the chin (not literally) and try and ignore the mind games, because at the end of the day that's all it is.
