Michael Carberry, the former England opener, has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour, his county Hampshire announced on Thursday.
Carberry, 35, missed Hampshire’s championship match last week against Warwickshire after feeling unwell.
He saw a specialist on Tuesday and his county confirmed he has been told he has cancer. Carberry will undergo further tests to determine his treatment.
Hampshire said in a statement: "Following recent reports about his health and now that he has spoken fully to his family, friends and team-mates, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that after a brief period of feeling unwell, a specialist has determined that Michael Carberry has a tumour that is cancerous.â€

Carberry had to pull out of an England Performance Programme trip to Australia in the winter of 2010 when he was diagnosed with a blood clot on his lungs.
It was feared at one stage that he would never play cricket again but the condition was controlled by medication and he recovered to win back his England place three years later.
“Michael has been part of the Hampshire Cricket family for 10 years and on behalf of everyone at and associated with the club, I would like to send him and his family our very best wishes at this very difficult time,†said Rod Bransgrove, the Hampshire Cricket chairman. “‘Carbs’ has taken on and beaten serious illness before and we will be doing all we can to make sure he does the same again this time.â€

Carberry was Alastair Cook’s opening partner on the disastrous Ashes tour of 2013-14. He averaged 28.10 in five Tests and lost his place in the fallout from the Ashes whitewash.
Carberry has been a prolific batsman in county cricket and the Big Bash in Australia. He is unlucky not to have played more for England and was unfortunate he received his big chance in the toughest series of all against a flying Mitchell Johnson spearheading an Australian team determined to win back the Ashes.
He made his Test debut for England in Bangladesh in 2010 and has played six Tests in total. He has also appeared in six one-day internationals and one Twenty20 last playing for England against Sri Lanka in 2014.

He is not the first county cricketer this season to be diagnosed with cancer. Worcestershire’s 22 year-old batsman Tom Fell missed the first three months of this season and underwent chemotherapy treatment after cancerous cells were found in his lymph nodes. It was discovered in a routine check up after Fell had surgery last year for testicular cancer.
Fell has since returned to cricket and scored a half century in his first innings after being cleared to play cricket again.
This season started with the shocking news that James Taylor was forced to retire after being diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. Taylor has had surgery to have a permanent defibrillator fitted but will never play cricket again

I just saw the news late last night. Knocked me for six. Gutted for Cabs. He is a class act both on and off the field. He is especially good with all the younger fans, engaging with them, and always signing everything put before him.
More news is expected Tuesday. Hoping for some positive news. Top man. Good to see so many people rallying around him.
