A key performer in the West Indies World T20 success, legspinner Badree was a rare shining light in last season's disappointing BBL for the Heat, claiming the most wickets with nine scalps.
"Sam was a proven performer for us last season," coach Daniel Vettori said.
"To get him back in that role that he did so well in is great for the club."
The Heat won only three of eight games last season, their last coming after Badree took 5-22 against the Stars to finish their season on a high.
They will also be bolstered by the addition of Brendon McCullum.
The New Zealander was originally due to play for the Heat in 2015-16, however he decided to play on in international cricket until the end of the World T20.
"Brendon McCullum coming in is also going to make a huge difference," Vettori said.
"Not only with his batting but with his leadership and the way he enjoys the game of cricket."
The Heat have also secured the signature of big-hitting Strikers batsman Alex Ross.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
