NEW DELHI: On June 6, 1994 the hitherto unthinkable took place at Edgbaston . Brian Lara , the swaggering West Indian batsman tipped for cricketing greatness, became the first player in the game's rich history to cross 500. Playing for Warwickshire in the County Championship , Lara made the highest score in first-class history, 501 not out, out of a total of 810/4.
The poor opponents were Durham , who paid for a drop by wicketkeeper Chris Scott when Lara was on 18. Lara's innings spanned 474 minutes and needed 427 balls, his strike-rate being 117.33. The left-hander hit 62 fours and ten sixes.
Warwickshire had replied to Durham's 556/8 in stunning manner thanks almost entirely to Lara, with the next best being Kieth Piper's unbeaten 117. Only the opener Roger Twose (51) crossed the fifty-mark. The game petered out into a draw.
"I don't think I'm a great cricketer. It's nice to have records and be on top but I've still got a lot of cricket ahead of me and I need to be more consistent," said Lara after breaking the previous record of 499, set by Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad. "Records are there to be broken and I'm happy to be the one doing it. If the records I have set are broken I hope I am the one doing it. It's hard to compare my Test 375 with 501 here. You just have to cherish both of them."
Astonishingly, this landmark innings came hardly two months after Lara, aged 25, hit the highest individual score in Test cricket, 375.
