Stars of the finals Navin Stewart and Timothy Surujbally after the win against Guyana.
Barbados Tridents and T&T all rounder Navin Stewart smashed five consecutive sixes in a blistering 68 that took a representative T&T team to a 12-run victory over a representative Guyana team in the City of Lauderhill T20 Night league in Lauderhill, Florida on the weekend.
Guyana won the toss and inserted T&T, a decision they thought was paying off, after grabbing two early wickets.
However, Stewart and skipper Timothy Surujbally got together and the former started beating the ball all around the park. The Tobagonian Stewart who smacked 77 in the semi-finals, ended up as the star of the tournament after his final heroics.
He reached his half century of just 18 balls and consumed 30 balls for his 68 runs, which took the game away from Guyana. Surujbally was also effective in counting a busy 28.
When Guyana batted, they found the former PowerGen player Surujbally too hot to handle and he nabbed two wickets that threw off their challenge. The top bowler for T&T on the night was however Ken Singh who took the early fight to Guyana in claiming three wickets for 28 runs. Stewart also returned to capture a wicket and round of an excellent night.
Speaking to Guardian Media, the big hitting Stewart said the tournament proved a perfect foil for him in his preparations for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament.
“I am approaching my third CPL tournament this year and I am keen to go out there. I have played for the Guyana Amazon Warriors and now I am in my second year with the Barbados Tridents.
“I am grateful to God and the powers at be at the Tridents for picking me and I intend to repay their confidence with good performances. I am happy to get tournament like these, where I can refine my game and I must say hats off to the guys up here in Fort Lauderdale for organising a well run tournament.â€
