opening day of the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand three-day inter-county U19 tournament yesterday at Enterprise.
Overnight and morning rain left sections of the outfield wet which delayed the start on play up until 15:00hrs.
Openers Mark Williams and Nathan Persaud added 27 for the opening stand after Essequibo were asked to bat in hazy conditions. Williams and Persaud survived some testing moments as they reached 22 with out lost before another shower sent the players off the field after nine overs. Following the interruption Williams got a leading edge off Cylus Tyndall and was caught for six before Satesh Latchana retired hurt on one.
Persaud looked solid in hitting three fours off 51 balls but was caught of left arm spinner Joel Seetaram for 22 with the score on 47. But skipper Keemo Paul batted with confidence to remain unbeaten on 25, while Sachin Persaud is on eight; bad light prevented further at 17:14 hrs.
Paul showed glimpses of his class, favouring the back foot drive and played it to perfection as he took boundaries off Seetaram who was guilty of bowling too short at times. Paul has so far stroked five fours; Tyndall has 1-14 and Seetaram 1-22.
Play continues at 09:30 hrs today.
