It is Time to Fix Cricket in Guyana – Sports Director Jones
Plagued with litigation and injunctions from factions of the GCB and the GCB itself filing matters of its own has robbed the local board of due election that is free, fair, transparent and acceptable by all stakeholders.
At present the current executives serving at the GCB are construed to be illegal by some of the stakeholders who have refused to accept the current GCB executives. The PPP/C administration stepped in to bring order and an acceptable solution when they appointed Clive Lloyd to an interim management committee and dissolved the then GCB executives. Let’s be reminded of the following steps taken by the then Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony outlined through a missive of the Guyana Chronicle as follows:
Further, after following due process in the National Assembly, the Cricket Administration Bill was assented to on August 14, 2014 when the then Head of State, President Donald Ramotar affixed his signature to the document. That step made the Cricket Administration Bill an Act.
In keeping with the requirements of the ACT the Minister wrote Mr. Dave Cameron, president of the West Indies Cricket Board, on October 9, 2014. Enclosed in that correspondence was a copy of the Guyana Cricket Administration Act 2014. The Minister further pointed out Section 17 of the Act pertaining to the appointment of the Cricket Ombudsman.
The Minister had also requested the submission of five possible candidates to take up the post of Ombudsman. The WICB was given fourteen days to provide the names and contact information for those candidates. However, after time elapsed and no submissions were made, by the WICB, Minister Anthony proceeded to appoint Dr. Winston McGowan.
That appointment was officially announced on December 31, 2014 – almost three months after Minister Anthony had written to Mr. Cameron.

Secondly, Minister Anthony was tasked with selecting a date for elections by the GCB following consultation with the WICB. Again, the Minister wrote the WICB on January 19, 2015 indicating that Section 7 of the Guyana Cricket Act 2014. Act, #14 of 2014 provides for the following:
The first election be held in accordance with Section 17 on the date appointed in writing by the Minister acting in consultation with the West Indies Cricket Board.
In that correspondence, Minister Anthony proposed March 15, 2015 as the date for the GCB elections. It was expected that by that time the County Boards would have completed their respective elections thereby enabling them to participate in the Guyana Cricket Board Elections
comply with the law, so that cricket administration in Guyana can be properly restored.
The WICB President Dave Cameron visited Guyana and after meeting with then Minister Anthony objected to the Act with the GCB in full support that had earlier refused to be guided by the act. The political atmosphere that prevailed subsequently may have contributed to the powers that be not returning to the bill and cricket matters.

n a recent interview current Sports Director commenting on the situation that obtained presently said “It is time to fix cricket in Guyana.â€â€œThat the current government revisit the cricket Bill, the GCB executives who adamantly call for election to be held withdraws injunction pending in the courts to proceed with having elections at the level of the GCB. It is time the Sports Director reiterated.†In order for the smooth running of cricket in Guyana acceptable to all stakeholders and not just for the satisfaction of a few bent on holding power. As it relates to the management of the WICB Jones shied away from commenting on the modus operandi there and on Cameron’s stance, but will only say that he fully supports the views of Caricom heads to intervene at the level of the WICB, this is after a meeting with the heads a month back.
WICB in more recent times experienced several disagreements with its senior men’s players and the WIPA. Sammy’s and Bravo’s comments at the conclusion of the World T/20 championship came in for harsh criticism by the WICB. Now there is an online petition campaign gathering momentum called “CHANGE†with the sole objective of having Caricom dissolve the WICB.
