Lara bigger than T&T in India

Baldath Mahara, second left, with West Indies superfan Peter Matthews and Guardian Media’s Vinode Mamchan enjoying the Indian experience with others.
He is now retired but the name of Brian Lara seems to carry more weight than the entire Trinidad and Tobago when it comes to matters in India.
This according to a fan who left T&T to support the West Indies in India at the ICC World T20.
Baldath Maharaj, manager of First Citizens Bank in Chaguanas, said he was amazed at the reaction he got when he called the name Brian Lara.
Maharaj told Guardian Media: “As I moved around India I noticed that not many people knew of Trinidad and Tobago.
“I tried my best to explain where it was and what it was known for but I got little response. When I called the name Brian Lara, immediately people were able to align with the country.â€
Maharaj added that in some stores he was given special treatment when they realised he was from the same country as Lara.
“Once you mention the name Lara and cricket, the people here treat you very well. I had experiences of being in some stores and when I told the people I was from Brian Lara’s land they give me even discounts.
“The man has remained a God in India, they love him here and he is a great ambassador for his country and region.â€
Maharaj noted that with endless business opportunities in India, the government of T&T should have Lara lead delegations to the country to bring business connections.
Maharaj said: “What I also noticed is that cricket is like a visa. Once you are involved in cricket as a player, official and even fan, you get very good treatment.
“Coming here to support the West Indies team has been an absolutely wonderful experience.†(VM)
