Leon Johnson proud to be in the company of Lloyd and Harper

At 28 Guyana Jaguars Captain Leon Rayon Johnson not only became the only Guyanese Skipper to win consecutive First-Class titles, but he led also from the front with bat with the most runs in the tournament from 10 matches, Johnson was the only batsman with 800 runs (807) he also made two centuries and five fifties at an average of 57.64 and hit the most sixes (19) and took the second most catches (17). But the crowning moment for Johnson, who has two fifties in four Tests, was seeing Gudakesh Motie at long-on, run to his left to catch Dennis Bullie off Veerasammy Permaul to give Guyana an innings and 54-run win against Jamaica and its eighth Regional First-Class title.

No team has won more than eight matches in a single season and the victory against Jamaica was the eighth for the Jaguars. The Jaguars also won eight games last season. Jamaica is the only other team to win eight games in a season which they achieved in 2008 & 2012.

Johnson joined Clive Lloyd (75 & 83) and Roger Harper (87 & 93) as the only Guyana Captain to win the title twice after Rohan Kanhai led Guyana to its first title in 1973. Carl Hooper is the only other Guyanese Captain to lift the Trophy in 1998. “It’s great to be in the prestige company of Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Harper in terms of titles won, Guyana has produced high quality players and teams in the past but has never been able to repeat as champions so that’s a feather in the cap of me and the team,” Johnson said with a smile as broad as the Kamauni Creek where he hails from…

“I think one of the main reasons for us remaining unbeaten has been our consistency in all departments including the way we prepare, what we produce on the field is just a reflection of the way we train and prepare for games,” said the GCC left-hander…

“Our strength this season has been our bowling, on eight occasions we have been able to take 20 wickets and win games. I am a firm believer that bowlers win matches, so once we the batters put the runs on the board we give the bowlers the chance to express themselves,” said Johnson, who has four tons and 28 fifties from 73 games at this level…

Sadly those victories and the titles mean nothing and really cannot be compared with the competition of the past.

I am sure you will agree.

I have always been consistent.

Despite the paucity of regional cricket, whoever wins is an achievement and I have stated that consistently.

You have always maintained winning the title means nothing, so I am just endorsing your very learned view point or rather reminding you of your flippant view when the Guyanans languished at the bottom of the table, season after season.

Unlike you Sir, I do not have that sort of insularity as I have no vested interest.

Sad to say but you are terribly biased but I am sure you will accept you are pro Guyanan at the expense and abuse of all others especially your nemesis and where all of your regional envy lie.

Would you not agree you simply cannot compare the achievements of past competitions and winners to now. Numerically yes but in terms of quality, never.

Do you think the Guyanans would be like the Jamaicans, as despite winning several successive tournaments they had very little representation in the Windies team?

Also do you think, like Jamaica, the Guyanans are winning because of stability in their team selection as their players, unlike other parts of the region, are not in demand for international tournaments?

In my view Chandrika should be given a long run as he has shown a good balance of technique and looking to score.

Well done to the Guyanans.

That's the fallacy you and Chin promote.

T20 mercenaries are NOT interested in this 4 Day Format

SO they would not have played , anyways

But like Chin IF she repeats it enough , it just might become true

You do NOT even comprehend my viewpoint

Which has always been that despite Guyana "languishing" at the bottom :

They get MORE Debutants in maroon Caps than Jamaica that Win the Title.

One day , you may just  get it , WHEN you take off those Insular glasses.

Soon , I hope

Folks , so that this poster do not MISREPRESENT :

One of the goals of this 4 day format is to get the BEST for our TEST squad.

When Jamaica WIN the title and Guyana is LAST place:

Guyana from individual performers get MORE maroon CAPS than Jamaica.

Hence my inference that finishing at the Top or Bottom does NOT matter.

It is the individual stars that populate the International W.I. 5 day squad that really matters

I hope you guys can comprehend this  ;)

For example Guyana won this title last year :

NONE of the players are in the West Indies squad

BUT there are 6 from Barbados.

Hope u guys can grasp this !

I will never aim to misrepresent anyone, especially you, but thanks for restating your position.

The fact is based on your position, winning the tournament does not matter.

It still does not answer my questions but hey ho that is the norm.

When Jamaica consistently won they only had Gayle in the squad because perhaps due to having a stable basis for selection as they were not disrupted by T20 international tournaments.

Many of their players did well, Odean Browne, Miller etc and the latter had a Windies recall if my memory serves me right.

In my view Guyana has similarities to this syndrome except I think the Guyanans have Chandrika and Bishoo particularly who should be in contention but the latter seem to be ignored for some obscure reason and when selected his workload is not managed.

As you said when the Guyanans made the bottom of the table their own they did better in terms of selection so based on your theory the numbers from Barbados is not surprising. Also I would think having a  Bim Captain may have something to do with it.

Anyway there has been very few, irrespective from where they come, making debuts and securing a place.

However to follow your point, the Guyanans may have had many debutants but how many are still there?

What does that say for regional cricket as a whole?
