The club is sorry to announce the passing of long time associate and supporter of Bath CC, Peter Wight.

Originally from British Guyana in the West Indies he played first class cricket for Somerset CCC over a period of 12 years scoring a massive 17000 first class runs in 333 matches with a highest score of 222*. He was named as one of the Playfair Cricketers of the year in 1961 during his most prolific period when he scored over 2000 runs on two occasions during 1960 – 62.

It was however after he retired that many of the Bath CC members will remember him. Many would have developed their cricketing skills in his cricket school that Peter had built in the car park with his Benefit money from Somerset back in 1965. During this time of coaching many youngsters in the Bath Area, he was also very busy becoming one of the most senior umpires in the country, officiating in a massive 567 first class matches most notably standing at Edgbaston when Brian Lara scored his record innings of 501 in 1994 for Warwickshire CCC.

The club director of cricket Gregg Brown “ This is very sad news for all at Bath CC, he has had a long affiliation with the club, having his cricket school in the car park, coaching a lot of past Bath CC and local players for many hours. He was obviously an outstanding player, but it was as an excellent coach that I remember him, he demanded dedication and discipline, I remember in one of these sessions telling me off for picking the seam, I never did that again!!! He latterly was a massive supporter of the girls and woman’s game and formed a strong bond with Jan Godman in the early set up of the Bath wanderers, before they joined forces with Bath CC.  Recently he came back to the club to open the new refurbished indoor school. The club and the cricketing world will miss him”

Peter Wight- Born 25th June 1930 – Died December 2015 aged 85.

Tribute to Peter Wight

Somerset Wanderers Ladies started going to Peter Wight's cricket school to be coached in January 1969, before their first season started in the summer of that year. This continued every winter until his association with the school finished.

In the mid 1980's when a junior team was formed he also coached the girls on Saturday afternoons for no charge.

He soon became President of the Club, a position he held until the Wanderers moved to Bath CC more than 30 years later.

During the summer if he was not umpiring on the County circuit he would umpire our matches.

He also helped in our Fund raising for the club especially when we were raising money for our overseas tours. In 1988 he helped us push a bed from Bristol to Bath to raise money for CLIC and our tour to New Zealand and joined in our car washing in the Bath CC car park.

Peter often helped us with equipment and put us in touch with County bats in Gloucestershire.

Peter always showed lots of enthusiasm for the team and was always there for 'his girls' giving advice and criticism with the same demeanour when needed, always with patience. He always believed in us as a team and encouraged us in whatever we did whether playing cricket or 'pushing baths'.

Peter & Joyce were also very hospitable and we were invited to their house on many occasions for a wonderful supper.

Peter was a great guy and a wonderful friend to Somerset Wanderers as President, coach, mentor and supporter. We were very fortunate to have benefited from his experience.

He will be sadly missed by us all.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0

WarrenJameis Winston is asked about being named QB3 on the Giants' roster behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart:

"As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I'm a starter in this league.

But you have to be able to be grateful for your role...my role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.

No matter if I'm 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it's always a first for everything.

I focus on what I would love. And what I would love is for this team to have success."

ChristinaIt is time for a full evaluation and accountability to the people of this region for the disastrous batting performance of the West Indies Cricket Team. We cannot disregard what all of us witnessed and endured in the last three test matches.
