Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe has died aged 53.
Diagnosed in September 2014 with terminal double hit Lymphoma, he passed away this morning in Auckland.
In a statement a family spokesperson said, "It is with heavy hearts that the family of Martin Crowe, MBE advise his death."
He died "peacefully today surrounded by family".
The statement was headed 'God Speed. Rest in Peace'.
A polarising figure at times but one who only ever had cricket's best interests at heart, he gained a new legion of admirers as he faced his illness with courage and grace.
Much to his delight, he lived long enough to see New Zealand reach last year's World Cup final - one match further than his legendary team managed in 1992.
His tears were testament to his love for the game.
Crowe, who proudly represented the Cornwall Cricket Club, made his Test debut against Australia in 1982, hitting the first of 17 centuries the following year against England.

While McCullum and Williamson have etched their names into New Zealand's history books in recent years, when I think of New Zealand, I think of Martin Crowe and Sir Richard Hadlee. I was blessed to see them in their pomp. Two of my all time favourites.

Although many rate Crowe's 100 not out against Australia in the 1992 World Cup as one of his best, I thought the 81 not out scored against West Indies in the same tournament to be the better of the two.

What a tournament he had in 1992: 456 runs at an average of 114 to go with four fifties, one century and a strike rate of 90.83

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team.
