Defending champions, Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC), continued their unbeaten run of form in the 2016 Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board 50-Over Premiership I Tournament as they whipped PowerGen by a six-wicket margin when round four action bowled off at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Penal-based team found the going tough against the likes of QPCC bowlers Khary Pierre (4/35), spinner Sunil Narine (2/35) and Marlon Barclay (2/36). The visitors would crumble under pressure and were soon dismissed for a miserly tally of 164 in 40 overs. Ewart Nicholson (35) was PowerGen’s best contributor with the bat joined by Ancil Bhagan (31) and Royston Crandon (18).
In their turn at the crease, the hosts raced to a victorious 166 for four, led by a strong batting display of 75 off 71 balls from Darren Bravo and a captain’s knock of 62 courtesy Justin Guillen. Bravo smashed six sixes and three fours before going out leg-before to Jovan Ali (2/29). Strassack Sankar finished as the pick of the bowlers, bagging two for 21.
Meanwhile at the Diego Martin Recreation Ground, Merry Boys were pushed to the line by a determined Victoria United outfit, but managed to nip a fiverun win over the visitors. Batting first, Merry Boys were only able to muster a total of 202 after 49.1 overs. Aaron Alfred (51) led the way for the hosts with a half-century while Amir Jangoo (23) and Javed Ramdhanie (23no) also contributed with the bat.
Ranga Latchana did the most damage with the ball picking up two for 26, followed by Pharrel Jugmohan (2/31) and Rajiv Gosine (2/35).
In reply, Victoria showed good competitive spirit but fell just short, dismissed for 197 after 49.2 overs. Lincoln Roberts (65) smashed another half-century following a similar knock in the three-day version on Saturday, while Andre Bryce (27) and Latchana (26) also provided fair support.
Williams however, was the pick of the bowlers for Merry Boys as he captured three for 36, backed by Aneil Kanhai and Ramdhanie’s spells of two for 21 and two for 37 respectively.
