South Africa – Leading batsmen Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin carved out half-centuries to propel West Indies Women to a handsome 57-run victory over South Africa and a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match One-Day International series yesterday.
Opting for first knock at Buffalo Park, West Indies Women were dismissed for 232 with four balls left in the innings, with captain Taylor hitting a top score of 79 and Dottin supporting with 61. The pair put on a brilliant 135 for the third wicket which pulled the visitors around from a dodgy position of 25 for two in the eighth over.
Twenty-year-old leg-spinner Sune Luus was again among the wickets with three for 34 while seamer Marizanne Kapp picked up two for 38. In reply, South Africa Women were 85 for one in the 22nd over but collapsed to 175 all out off 45.3 overs – losing their last nine wickets for 90 runs.
Off-spinners Hayley Matthews (2-18) and Anisa Mohammed (2-29), along with leg-spinner Shaquana Quintyne (2-20) all finished with two wickets each. Opener Trisha Chetty top-scored with 51, Mignon du Preez hit 24 and Andrie Steyn, 20 but no other batsman made it into the 20s.
The victory came on the heels of the Caribbean side’s 16-run win in the opening ODI at the same venue on Wednesday, and it allowed them to pick yet another two valuable ICC Championship points.
West Indies were in trouble early on when Matthews (6) and Quintyne (6) perished cheaply but the two veterans Taylor and Dottin came to their side’s rescue with attractive innings. Taylor faced 83 balls and slammed 11 fours and a six in posting her 23rd ODI half-century while Dottin pummelled seven fours and a six off 78 deliveries for her 16th ODI half-century.
Their dismissals – 17 balls apart and in the space of eight runs – triggered a terminal slide for the Windies Women and they lost their last eight wickets for 72 runs. Shemaine Campbelle chipped in with 24 from 30 balls and Britney Cooper, 21 also off 30 deliveries, to help West Indies Women eke out precious runs at the end.
Wicketkeeper Chetty then put South Africa women on course for victory, anchoring two productive stands at the top of the order. She posted 43 for the first wicket with Andrie Steyn (20) before following up with a second wicket stand of 42 with Mignon du Preez (24). All told, the experienced Chetty counted five fours off 78 deliveries but she was fifth out as part of the slide, and South Africa never recovered.
West Indies Women will be gunning for a clean sweep when they face the Proteas Women in the final game tomorrow.
Scores:
WEST INDIES WOMEN 232 all out off 49.2 overs (Stafanie Taylor 79, Deandra Dottin 68, Shemaine Campbelle 24, Britney Cooper 23; Sune Luus 3-34, Marizanne Kapp 2-38)
SOUTH AFRICA 175 all out off 45.3 overs (Trisha Chetty 51, Mignon du Preez 24, Andrie Steyn 20; Hayley Matthews 2-18, Shaquana Quintyne 2-20, Anisa Mohammed 2-29)
