CENTURION: Ewart Nicholson.
Former Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 batsman Ewart Nicholson started the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) domestic season with a bang, hitting 147 to lead PowerGen Penal to 360 for seven declared on the opening day of their Premier Division One three-day league match against Merry Boys at Syne Village in Penal, yesterday.
Nicholson hit 19 fours and three sixes and faced just 138 balls to score the first ton of the season, which he described as his best so far.
“I went out there and put down my head and played positively and everything worked out the way I wanted it to happen so I am just happy with the knock,†Nicholson told the Express yesterday.
It was Nicholson’s third century at the Premier Division level and he said “this is definitely was my best knock. I have been training hard and trying to get in the right frame of mind which is to stay positive and keep working hard no matter what,†said Nicholson, who represented the T&T Under-19s in 2012 where he also slammed a century against Barbados.
Among those in the 2012 side were Nicholas Pooran, Jeremy Solozano and Philton Williams who have all gone on to play for the senior national team and Nicholson is hoping to do the same.
“My goals are to score as much runs as possible and to try and make T&T senior team and help my club win matches,†the 22-year-old right-hander added.
Also among the runs yesterday for PowerGen were Ancil Bhagan who hit and unbeaten 65 and Royston Crandon who hit 42.
Merry Boys were 30 without loss at the close of play yesterday.
In other matches yesterday, defending champions Queen’s Park Cricket Club took a first innings lead of 21 against Jailal Enterprises Victoria United at Queen’s Park Oval, while Alescon Comets took first innings points against Jenexcon Tableland in Tableland.
At the Oval, Javon Searles grabbed six for 33 as Victoria were dismissed for 149 but Andre Bryce also grabbed six wickets for 64 runs to leave the Parkites on 170 for nine at stumps.
At Tableland, the hosts were dismissed for 102 with off-spinner Bryan Charles (five for 42) doing the damage. But pacer Uthman Muhammad struck back for the hosts, taking six for 28 as Comets were all out for 132. Batting a second time, Tableland reached 89 for three at stumps with a lead of 59.
In the other match yesterday, Prisons Sports were dismissed for 159 while First Citizens Clarke Road United closed the day on 122 for four.
