Steve Smith is good, but I prefer Joe Root and Staurt Broad's style and skill just a little bit more overall. I wouldn't mind having either one on my team, but I'd probably go with Joe Root if I had to choose.

Joe Root for me aswell as I think without question he is the most talented batsman that England have produced...I was going to say ever but that's a big call to make.
Put it this way, he's certainly got the potential to be anyway and with what he brings to the team off the pitch aswell, according to players he's played with and also against, he's a future England captain in the making.

Consider Smiif Leg Spin which is why he was Selected in the first place (after Warney retired)
Captaincy ....which he just grabbed with both hands!
I loved Joe taking on Warner in a Pub : courage in that skinny one !
and always coming in to Bat in troublesome situations.
TIE
I would pick them BOTH with Kane

I thought the OP was an either/or scenario? I wasn't aware that we could pick them both and that's why I choose Root.
I'd like to retract that previous comment now though and I will go with you, and I'll also pick both!

For me they are quite similar players. Both are top-notch batsmen who are handy part-time bowlers and can be used when needed. I find Steve Smith's more unorthodox style more interesting and entertaining to watch. The way he moves about in the crease is mind boggling. I can't really separate the two until they come up against each other in the Ashes next year. Very keen for an amazing series next year.

Also by the time that happens, both players will be a year older and have another years experience under their belt.
There's no doubt that both are the future of cricket, and it's not very often that a player stands out as much as these have.

For me, at the Test level, Kohli is in the tier below Williamson, Root and Smith. His average over the last 2 years is 43, good, but not on the same level as Williamson, Root and Smith. He was also embarrassed by England in the summer of 2014.
I think you can make a stronger argument that David Warner is more deserving to be grouped with that trio - he opens the batting, has scored more runs than any other batsman over the last 2 years and done so with an average of 63.
Kohli, however, has no peer when it comes to T20 cricket at the moment - averaging 89.71 over the last 2 years in the shortest format of the game.

I'd probably also put Warner up there aswell to be honest, purely for his consistency alone.
It's one thing having a few good matches but to have that consistency over 2/3 years then that takes some doing and he deserves more credit than what he gets sometimes.
