In a perfect example of how to mix sports with education, recent Young Warriors Cricket Club captain and all rounder Vishal Mahabir has left for Canada to fulfill a scholarship – CARICOM Faculty Leadership Programme – which is funded by the
Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT).
The 26 year old former Berbice Under-17 cricketer is currently a Chemistry Lecturer 1 within the Department of Chemistry, Division of Natural Sciences at the University of Guyana, Berbice Campus for the 5th consecutive year and is also the coordinator for the Division of Natural Sciences since 2013. To further emphasize his versatility, he coordinates sports for the Berbice Campus.
Vishal, as he is fondly called by his team mates, attended International Academic Conferences and presented two different research papers namely:
1. International Conference on Biotechnology and Food Sciences, Bangkok Thailand, 2012 and
2. The Caribbean Academy of Sciences18th General Meeting and Conference on “Hazard Mitigation: Protecting Caribbean Infrastructure – Securing Caribbean Communitiesâ€, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Bridgetown, Barbados
Over the past 11 years, Vishal balanced his studies and his favorite game of cricket so well that he was selected in a Berbice under-19 squad, represented Rose Hall Estate Cricket Club, currently a member of the Young Warriors Cricket Club and gained selection on the New Amsterdam/Canje Zone Team. He has two hundreds under his belt and a number of wickets. He is a serving member of the Competitions Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board.
Mahabir plans to return to his native country on completion of his scholarship to serve and hope to make a significant impact on the growth and development of his cricket club.
The club wishes him success and continued growth in his academic and cricket career.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
