Mark Wood has been ruled out of the third and final Test after a second cortisone injection to his chronic left ankle problem in the space of six months. It was reported in August that he may require surgery at some point though he was declared fit enough to take his place in the squad for this tour.
This is disappointing as Wood's pace and ability to get the ball to reverse swing had caused Pakistan's batsman some troubles in Dubai. There has long been concerns about Wood's health and his ability to stay healthy as he puts so much torque and effort into his run-up and action.
Steven Finn's injury earlier in the tour really hurts. I would imagine that Liam Plunkett will replace Wood in the side. Samit Patel is an option, especially on a Sharjah wicket that is typically receptive to spin, but I would much prefer to go with the extra seam bowler - Patel, for me, is more of a bits and pieces cricketer.
