A brilliant 107 not out by Jevoy Spence propelled Jamaica to a comfortable 167-run victory over Canada in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-19 Championship at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) yesterday.
Jamaica made 280-2 from their allotted 50 overs before dismissing Canada for 113. Opener Spence, who carried his bat through the innings, struck six fours and two sixes from 150 balls in his 225 minutes stay at the crease. Odean Smith made 68 not out, while Captain Michael Frew chipped in with 53. Suliman Khan took 1-41 for the North Americans.
Canada, the ICC Americas representative, were then dismissed by Jamaica for 113 with only Thursaanth Anantharajah managing any score of note with 31. Odean Smith followed up his half-century with 3-25. Oshane Thomas grabbed 3-30 with George Walker taking 2-17 to seal Jamaica's emphatic win.
This was Jamaica's second win from three games. The hosts had defeated Guyana by five wickets before crashing to a 127-run defeat to the Windwards on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) defeated the Windward Islands by two wickets at Jamalco Sports Complex.
The Windward Islands batted first and reached 209-8 in their 50 overs, with Ryan John leading all scorers with 66 not out. Gidron Pope made 65 with Jyd Goolie taking 3-32.
In reply, T&T reached 210-8 with Keagan Simmonds hitting 60, ably supported by Jameel Maniram with 40 not out, and Kirstan Kallicharan with 34. Othneil Lewis snared 5-29 and Ryan John took 2-43 in a losing effort.
At Manchester High School, Guyana defeated the Leeward Islands by six wickets. Scores, Leewards 217 all out, Guyana 220-4 from 35.1 overs.
Guyana won the toss and asked Leewards to bat, and they were bundled out for 217 with Vice-Captain Jaeel Clarke top-scoring with 60, inclusive of five fours and three sixes. Captain Kacey Carty chipped in with 48.
Kassem Khan took 3-28 from 8.2 overs, and was well supported by Akshaya Persaud with 3-39 and Balchan Baldeo with 3-43.
The competition continues on Monday with host Jamaica having a rest day. Canada will take on T&T at Jamalco, while Windward Islands and Leeward Islands clash at STETHS. The third match in the fourth round will see Barbados taking on Guyana at Chedwin Park.
