"It's a thin line between love and hate," goes a line from a famous 1970s hit song recorded by The Persuaders. But it's not only love and hate that are so parted; often, there is only a slight divide that separates totally opposite outcomes. A simple, avoidable mistake, for example, can turn probable success into disappointing failure, or a single missed opportunity can be the difference between winning and losing.
England completed a sizeable 169-run win over Australia on the fourth day of the opening Ashes Test in Cardiff. Victory was achieved with more than an entire day to spare and so English fans undoubtedly see the result as a comprehensive triumph over its arch-adversary who so humiliated them and almost totally dismantled their team the last time they met.
While the English cricket fraternity celebrates, however, they should note that the journey has only just begun, and there is a lot of distance yet to cover. They should also be aware that had a few occurrences during the game gone slightly differently, things might not have turned out as they did.
