Eden Gardens to host World T20 2016 final
Sat, Jul 11 2015
Eden Gardens is likely to host the final of World T20 2016.
Kolkata's Eden Gardens will host the final of the World T20 2016 while Chennai misses out on being a venue for the multi-team even next year, according to reports. Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Mohali, Nagpur, Indore and Dharmshala are the other cities where the sixth edition of the T20 tournament will take place from March 11 to April 3.
With Jagmohan Dalmiya heading Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it comes as no surprise that Kolkata, which missed out on hosting the 2011 World Cup India-England match, is hosting the World T20's summit clash. Dharamsala, which houses the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) headquarters, also found favour because of BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur, who heads the HPCA.
Eden Gardens was the venue for Indian Premier League final in 2013 and 2015 with Mumbai Indians emerging champions in both editions. The ground has hosted only one T20I so far - the India vs England game in October 2011, which the visiting team won by six wickets.
Meanwhile, the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad will not host any World T20 matches, nor will it host the Test match between India and South Africa later this year due to ongoing renovation work at the venue, which will take two years for completion.
