Nathaniel McDavid’s brilliant bowling performance kept the national Under-17 team in the hunt for the West Indies Cricket Board Regional U-17 title in Tobago, as T&T defeated Barbados by five wickets at Louis D’Or in round four, yesterday.
T&T has now won three of its four matches, along with Windward Islands and Jamaica. The title may be decided by fast bowling points, as each team is awarded 0.1 of a point for every wicket taken by a fast bowler.
The last round will be played tomorrow, with T&T facing Guyana, Windward Islands playing Leeward Islands and Jamaica meeting Barbados.
Bowling first yesterday, McDavid grabbed 5/22 in 5.4 overs to help dismiss Barbados for a paltry 82 in 21.4 overs. Captain Kirstan Kallicharan took 2/4, while Quammie Mohammed snatched 1/24. Justyn Gangoo was busy in the field for T&T, effecting two run outs, while Keagan Simmons took three catches. Opening batsman Shian Brathwaite was the top scorer for Barbados, scoring 35.
T&T got to 86/5 in 24.2 overs to prevail fairly comfortably. Simmons and Cephas Cooper put on 57 for the first wicket as T&T seemed to be cruising to victory. However, the home team then lost four wickets for four runs as T&T was reduced to 61/4.
Sachin Seecharan made a quick ten before being dismissed, but McDavid joined Simmons to take T&T home. Simmons ended on an unbeaten 40 off 78 balls, hitting five fours and one six. Donte Niles was the best bowler for Barbados, picking up 3/9.
